Hyacinth Menace
Related to country: Kenya

Today mainstream media is awash with reports on the encroachment of the nototrious hyacinth weed on Lake Victoria the notable feature of our East African ecosystem. Effforts in the past to stem the spread of this hirtherto hazardous weed has failed.

Initially there was a proposal to use chemical methods to curb the weed but it was more apparent that this would greatly destroy the rich ecosystem of the Lake Basin and thus altering the food chains and the precious lives that abound and complete this aquatic environment.

Equally, the use of biological methods and more specifically the Hyacinth consuming organisms was a rather applauded method but nevertheless there is need for a lasting solution to this rather unwarranted destruction of the rich Lake Victoria ecosystem, one of the fresh water Lakes in East Africa with Millions of fish species residing in it.

Efforts must focus on eradicating this weed in Lake Victoria. What do you think is the way forward?
